WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Another Republican has joined the race for New Hanover County Sheriff.

Attorney Jason Vaughn filed his paperwork today.

Vaughn is a former deputy and a marine corps veteran. He says the county needs a strong leader and that he will use his experience and training to combat crime in New Hanover County.

“We need a proactive approach to law enforcement,” Vaughn said. “We need to be out there. The crimes that we have been seeing on the news today is very violent. We need to be out there in their faces. We need to get them off of the streets and we need to keep putting them back in jail.”

Vaughn will face Marc Benson in may’s Republican primary.

Former sheriff Sid Causey is challenging incumbent Ed McMahon on the Democratic side.

I know this candidate as I do the Sheriff along with the challengers. Jason Vaughn first came to the Dept of Corrections as an Officer where he after several years left for the New Hanover Sheriff’s Department and became a Deputy and School Resource Officer. He then left them to go to Law School, graduate and pass the Bar where he is a local practicing attorney. This candidate has the experience, the education and the Semper Fi attitude to be a great Sheriff. He is ex Law Enforcement, ex Corrections and always a US Marine. Jason Vaughn would be an excellent Sheriff!
