Woman accused of running over boyfriend takes stand in murder trial

READ MORE:

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- A Supply woman took the stand today in her trial for allegedly hitting and killing her boyfriend with a car two years ago.

Now it's up to a jury to decide if she was acting in self defense, if she murdered him or if the whole thing was an accident.

Julie Ann English, 50, took to the stand and began describing the up and down relationship she had with Michael Pate right up until his death in May of 2012.

English said she and Pate dated for 11 years, and at the beginning of the relationship there was a lot of love, but over time they fought a lot and that he was aggressive, especially after a weekend of drinking, doing cocaine, and smoking crack, which English says went on for more than seven years.

English claims Pate was physically and verbally abusive and that she was forced to take out a restraining order in 2007, when he held a knife to her throat.

Detectives say the night English ran over Pate, she had a cut on her face that allegedly was from pate assaulting her earlier in the evening.

English will retake the stand tomorrow as her second-degree murder trial continues at 9:30 a.m.
