WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — There will be at least two new members of the New Hanover County Commission this fall, and there are plenty of people interested in the jobs.

Earlier this year Commissioner Tom Wolfe, a Republican, said he would not run to keep his seat. Libertarian Brian Berger, the other incumbent whose term is up, did not file for reelection.

As the filing period ended this afternoon, 10 Republicans and two Democrats signed up to run to fill the two seats.

Democrats Patricia Spear and Rob Zapple automatically advance to November’s general election.

The crowded Republican field will have to be whittled down in a primary May 6. Republican candidates include Dave Conklin, John Dismukes, Derrick Hickey, Chuck Kays, Charles Kuebler, Ricky Meeks, Frank Roberts, Hank Thomas, Campbell Dodd and Skip Watkins.

The new commission may also have to fill another seat after the election if either Democrat Jonathan Barfield or Republican Woody White winds up winning the 7th District seat in the US House of Representatives.

Hickey’s decision to run for county commission means an opening on the New Hanover County School Board, where his four-year term expires this fall.

$20 says he shows up a few hours late to try to file

  • Wilmington Observer says:

By the time your comment was “Approved” (No one has been able to give me one reason WWAY does this) the deadline had passed.

I was so hopping that Mr. Berger would run and actually WIN again. And then, just after all of the votes had been counted I was hoping that he would JUMP UP and scream, “I WAS JUST KIDDING!!!” Then he would run out of the room, never to be heard from again.

How will we remain entertained by our political powers that be?

There are a couple on this list that could fit the bill and leading the way, Charles Kuebler. He is almost out of the same mold as Berger. If you want someone who seems to know a little about everything and a LOT about nothing, he is the man for the job.

It should be an interesting primary with a few Chuckles along the way. Pun intended.

Baseball, Baseball, nothing but baseball……No matter what the cost, nothing but baseball…..

  • Vog46 says:

Can’t wait till he spouts off about a county wide tax increase to being baseball here.
Yeah we know him here as Duke

  • Guest2020 says:

I don’t think the commission will have to worry about another seat becoming vacant as a result of the election for US House.

  • Okie says:

If Brian Berger should ever run for public office again, I have a plan. For those who would like to vote for him, there will be a special line to get in at the voting place. In that line, they will get a tattoo that says “IDIOT” across their forehead. Then go on to the voting booth and vote for Berger.
