CHARLOTTE, NC(AP) — Mecklenburg County medical officials say norovirus has been reported at a half-dozen long-term care centers in the Charlotte area.

The Charlotte Observer reports that the intestinal illness has hit some of the homes hard this winter.

Health department medical director Dr. Steve Keener said six nursing home or assisted living centers have taken steps to isolate those with the illness.

Officials do say the level of the illness is normal for this time of year.

The Laurels at Highland Creek has had their assisted living residents eat in their rooms, rather than the dining room to try to prevent the spread of the illness.

Executive Director Beverly Janco said group activities were temporarily canceled and residents were encouraged to stay in their rooms and restrict visitors to emergencies only.
