Soldier surprises family during Mardi Gras celebration

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- After six months of deployment in Romania, Mike Haskett is giving his kids a big Mardi Gras surprise.

The Cotton Exchange hosted its second annual Mardis Gras celebration Saturday. Children gathered around for the cutting of the king cake. Keeping with tradition, one slice of each cake had a small baby inside. Whoever got the piece with the baby got a surprise, but Haskett planned on giving his eight-year-old daughter Maddie an even bigger surprise.

"She's like three, four inches taller than what she was last time I saw her," Haskett said. "She's reading now. So much changes in six months. It's gonna be amazing to see the kids."

Maddie exclaimed, "Daddy!" then immediately rushed into his arms with tears in her eyes.
