WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington’s more direct connection to the Oscars turned out not to be a winner.
“Iron Man 3,” which shot in and around Wilmington in the summer of 2012, was nominated for Best Visual Effects in the 86th Annual Academy Awards. The super hero sequel did not win the award. Instead it went to the outer space thriller “Gravity,” which is among the favorites for Best Picture.
The nomination did garner Wilmington a few seconds of air time during the Oscars telecast. The clip used to illustrate IM3’s nomination showed Iron Man saving people falling from Air Force One, including a shot of the stunt being filmed over the Cape Fear River along the Wilmington riverfront in July 2012.
