RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- It's March, but winter has not given up in North Carolina.
School systems dismissed classes early Monday after the National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for much of the central and eastern parts of the state.
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and N.C. State University canceled evening classes because of the approaching storm. The UNC men's basketball team was still scheduled to play its game against Notre Dame Monday evening.
Sleet and freezing rain was expected in the eastern part of the state and the northern Outer Banks beginning Monday afternoon. Up to a half inch of sleet also was possible in the central part of the state, including Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Durham and Raleigh.
Northeastern counties were expecting up to two inches of snow.
