WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Funeral arrangements have been set for a former Wilmington Police officer who died over the weekend.

Sgt. Edward L. Haynes was one of the first black officers WPD hired after the 1898 coup and race riots when he joined the force in 1954.

Haynes died at his Wilmington home Saturday at the age of 92.

His viewing is set for Friday at 6 p.m. at Shaw Funeral Home at 520 Red Cross St.

A funeral for Haynes is Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Luke AMEZ Church at 709 Church Street. Burial will follow at Pine Forest Cemetery on N. 11th St.
