Beekeepers swarm to Wilmington for annual convention

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The Wilmington Convention Center is a hive of activity this weekend as it hosts the North Carolina State Beekeepers Association's annual spring meeting.

This is the first time in decades the Port City has hosted the three-day event.

This year the group hosted the first ever "Bee Buddies" program. About 450 kids got an interactive look into apiology, or the study of bees.

"I thought it was really cool how they communicated by smelling each other," said Ian Meier, a 5th grader at Pine Valley Elementary School.

"I know they are learning some things that they're gonna carry home, and hopefully maybe we may see some of those grow up to be beekeepers," NCSBA president Julian Wooten said.

The buzz continues through Saturday.
