Motel opens doors after destroyed by fire

SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) -- A little more than a year ago part of a landmark motel in Surf City burned to the ground.

Friday the owner and staff at Tiffany’s celebrated a new beginning.

Boyd Taylor is from Wake Forest but has always had a soft spot in his heart for Surf City.

"It is just a great place, kind of a home away from home,” said Boyd Taylor, owner of Tiffany’s Motel.

When he got the chance eight years ago to buy Tiffany’s Motel, he jumped on it.

“It's more of a family theme here. I can remember bringing my kids. Now, I am bringing my grandkids," said Taylor.

In January 2013 a fire destroyed the original part of the motel leaving just a pile of soot.

"The flames were pretty high, about 20 to 30 feet high," said Paul Werkmeister, a Surf City firefighters.

That part of the building accounted for about a quarter of the entire motel, which is multiple buildings.

"There were a lot of four letter words, but wow was the one that really came to mind,” said Taylor.

Taylor decided to rebuild with not much more than ashes left.

"We wanted to take lemons and make lemonade," said Taylor.

Now, just over a year later, the new building is open for business.

"I knew we were going to rebuild and I knew we were going to succeed, but I didn't think it would be this beautiful,” said motel manager Regina Carter.

The new and modernized building has 12 rooms, some with an ocean view. They’ve also added king sized beds to every room and handicapped units.

"It’s fantastic. It’s such a big facility and it has that nice beachy look to it,” said Larry Bergman.

With Tiffany’s new look, Taylor is excited to see what the future holds.

"Surf City is long standing in our memories and in our life,” said Taylor.

Taylor estimates he lost hundreds of thousands of dollars of business during reconstruction and looks forward to this upcoming tourist season.
