Hiking for Hope: supporting women with cancer

BURGAW, NC (WWAY) -- Just in time for March 8th's International Womens Day, the Women of Hope organization held their inaugural "Hiking for Hope" fundraiser this weekend.

Old River Farms in Pender County hosted hundreds of folks raising money for female cancer patient support.

Live music, balloon animals, a petting zoo and hay rides accompanied the nature trails.

Hikers could choose from different levels of difficulty for the three mile course lining the NE Cape Fear River.

Cancer survivor and organization volunteer Lavonda Howard says, this organization is different because it provides both physical and mental support for women facing all types of cancer.

"A lot of times cancer patients go through treatment and they have a lot of support while they're going through treatment or they look like they have cancer." said Howard, "But a lot of it is healing even after they have finished their treatments and their surgeries, and that is what Women of Hope helps with."
