WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – Around UNC-Wilmington students were shocked to find out about head basketball coach Buzz Peterson’s firing, but not for the reasons you might think.

“When success is measured in wins and losses as it is in coaching it weighs on you,” said senior guard Tanner Milson. “He did a lot more than just what our wins and losses shows.”

As the product on the court diminished, so did the crowds that once filled into Trask Coliseum.

While word spread around campus that Peterson had been let go by the university many students were shocked that he had lasted with the program as long as he did.

“Well we sucked,” said freshman Austin Revels. “I mean honestly the team wasn’t all that good. We had great players but the chemistry and the coaching wasn’t there.”

Many students pointed to the homecoming game against College of Charleston as proof that fans will return if the right man is at the helm.

“I mean you bring in a good coach who’s going to bring an exciting sport to the students and he’s going to perform and show them that we can win then yeah we’ll definitely return,” said senior John Helms.

According to Senior Associate Athletic Director Joe Browning the school will begin a nationwide search for their next head coach Wednesday morning.

With your mindset, don’t worry yourself with being a coach, assistant coach…nor even a jock-strap cleaner.

Must make you feel like a really, really Big Boy to disparage and mock the accomplishments of others.

People should worry about being a jockstrap cleaner or they should worry about not being a jock strap cleaner?

Reality check “Big Boy”: While being able to play Frisbee is “nice”, when it comes to college sports, it’s not even on the list of things I would be sharing with others, much less brag about. Kind of embarrassing actually.

I assume you are referring to Ultimate as in Ultimate Frisbee. If so, please excuse me for laughing that you consider a national Frisbee championship to mean UNCW is a powerhouse school.

Says it all about the liberal mindset of another granola eating , Obama loving and Birkenstock wearing university. I assume you are not an economics or finance major because frisbee does not pay the bills and I have never heard about it making headlines anywhere. How much revenue does frisbee generate for UNCW? How about a statement from the AD on this hidden gem .

UNCW is a DI bottom dweller and will always be one in the world of collegiate athletics. The university was foolish and desperate to hire the nomadic ball coach in the first place. If I were an assistant or head coach mulling over a job offer , I would run like hell from this dysfunctional athletic department living on a beer budget. Buzz took advantage of the opportunity to live at the beach with a generous salary and will use his Carolina connection to land elsewhere. UNCW has a small checkbook to secure a decent coach to rescue a floundering program. Time for UNCW to focus on just academics and being a FRISBEE powerhouse!

Been here long enough to remember ALL of that.
You know what? They NEVER went past the 2nd round !!! Even by your own words.
Stop living in the past.
“Dids” and “Used to” don’t count anymore
They fired Buzz because he has had RECENT losing seasons.
They STINK. They are poorly attended. I don’t give a darn if the two are inter-related. This is the here and now.
And I have also said in past posts that Basketball and Baseball are two of the best attended sports they have BUT because of Title 13(?) they will have to keep an equal number of girls sports if they cut sports (as opposed to eliminating ALL). So keep baseball and basketball, women’s basketball and softball.
Get rid of the rest……
But frankly – with Buzz’s record? Now would be the time to eliminate all sports and giver the CURRENT athletes FULL scholarships to UNC CH or NC State to get them off campus and let the students left there LEARN – like they’re supposed to

I can’t believe these kids are putting the blame for a losing season all on the coach. If they flunk a class is it the fault of the professor? No, it isn’t. They should have put their best efforts out there. They all know how to play round ball and I don’t think they need to blame this on the coach. It’s my responsibility to do my job with or without my boss. Sadly these kids are our future.

“Sadly these kids are our future.”

Yep…and probably voted for “Hope and Change”.

Agree 110%…More fan support would have helped the team’s motivation. Looks like UNCW only has fair weather fans.

Those of us that are loyal fans of Seahawks appreciate all Buzz’s efforts and enthusiasm he brought to the program. We saw how hard he worked to make this happen with what little he had. Would have taken him another year or two but new blood will take a lot longer. For those impatient fair weather friends please show this hard working coach a little respect as he leaves. Your loss for not taking time to know him.

Here’s the thing……..he’s saying winning gets more attendance but THAt is proven wrong by other sports. CAA Swim champs? With a paltry 90 to 100 spectators per meet. Volleyball? Same thing.
ALL students and ALL taxpayers subsidize this program. We all “pay” so that 1% can take part in sports programs that don’t attract spectators. And worse than that is the fact that the CAA schools are spread out all over the place. Northeastern? In Boston
Drexel? PHiladelphia
Towson? Baltimore
Do you think they get there on a magic carpet?

Travel is a HUGE concern/cost – yet we get a hundred people to watch us swim and play volleyball. Yeah I knows – sports builds character and coaches are now “life mentors” in addition to coaching. You know what kids? You need to grow up – you need to know that sports are a privilege and NOT a requirement. A college education is also a privilege – one that is taken for granted by far too many students.
End athletics at UNCW and schools like UNC Pembroke – they stink at most of them and they’re not needed. Wanna swim? Go to Chapel Hill where the TV and radio broadcast rights for basketball and football almost pay for the athletic endeavors there.
You are going to UNCW kids – not some athletic powerhouse school.

End this tragedy Chancellor, end it now.

“You are going to UNCW kids – not some athletic powerhouse school.”

guess again! The mens Ultimate team has won a national championship and the womens team has won TWO national championships. Each are FREQUENT qualifiers for the National Championship tournament.

Powerhouse school…known coast to coast for their excellence. yes.

Wake up Vog. Guess you moved down after the Jerry Wainright and Brad Brownell years. Trask was packed. UNCW basketball was at the top of a CAA conference that included George Mason and VCU. Multiple years to the NCAA tournament (with a guy named Brett Blizzard).

2000 lost first round
2002 lost a close game in second round to Indiana…who went on to the championship game and lost to Maryland
2003 heartbreaker loss at buzzer to Maryland first round
2006 lost first round to George Washington by 3

Then the University shot itself in the foot by not trying to hold onto a great coach. Mediocrity ever since (the university’s fault)and that’s why no one shows their support anymore. I believe the kid is right. Put belief back in the program. Find the next Shaka Smart or Brad Stevens, start winning some games and the crappy league that is the CAA now, and we’ll all be back.

Lets have less “ball playing” and more academics.
