SNEADS FERRY, NC (WWAY) -- Jeanette Lopez, better known as "Mama J" to those she helps is behind the outreach program Mama J's Helping Hands. Her program is different from other local charities in many ways, largely because she doesn't ask anyone to pay for anything.
Yet she disputes the fact that this is simply a "hand out." Instead, she argues that it is a "hand up." Those she helps often come back to her...and even in the form of volunteerism. Lopez has a big heart and offers everything from baby formula and diapers to mothers in need to blankets for those who have nothing to keep them warm.
In a recent case, Lopez even helped a homeless woman build a safe shelter in the woods, thanks to help from volunteers at an area church.
Lopez invites anyone interested in helping...or those who just want to learn more about what she does to tour her Sneads Ferry facility Friday night at 6:00 and then participate in a silent auction filled with great gifts.
Mama J's Helping Hand is located at 2205 Hwy 172.
