WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — More than 200 students from across New Hanover County participated in the Special Olympics Basketball Tournament today at UNCW’s Trask Coliseum.

Athletes learned skills like dribbling, passing and different shooting techniques.

Event organizers say this is a great way for students to have fun and meet new friends.

“It’s important for our Special Olympic athletes, because it is a way to get them together to give them encouragement and to learn these different skills that they might not be exposed to,” coordinator Tiffany Lesley said.

The event is just one of the many the New Hanover County Special Olympics hosts each year.
