WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A suspicious suitcase found in front of Smart Start on S. College Rd. in Wilmington turned out to be nothing of concern.

The Wilmington Police Department Bomb Squad responded to the scene after a Smart Start worker flagged down an officer on patrol around 8:32 a.m. to report the suitcase.

After investigating, the Bomb Squad found that there was nothing in the suitcase but clothes.

WPD spokeswoman Linda Rawley said the department’s protocol is to treat every suspicious item/package as dangerous until it is determined to be safe.

I heard (via Aunt Gladys and cousin Myrtle’s gossip) that there was an old sock laying next to it with holes in it. Could the suitcase have gone off and shut itself afterwards…and that’s what remained of the assailant?
