RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Former Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker says he’s still a year away from deciding whether he’ll run for North Carolina governor in 2016.

The former five-term mayor told The News & Observer of Raleigh he recently completed a “listening tour” to four eastern North Carolina cities. The Democrat says those areas have been hurt by the legislature’s refusal to expand Medicaid and decisions on unemployment insurance.

The attorney announced his interest in running for governor in September. He says his decision will depend on what the electoral landscape looks like.

Attorney General Roy Cooper is making plans for a run for the Democratic nomination. Durham attorney Ken Spaulding is already a candidate.
