WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Are you looking for a weekend trip or getaway?

Wilmington International Airport is looking to boost passenger numbers by offering travel packages to the Big Apple.

“The great thing is our new direct service from Wilmington to LaGuardia and coming back from LaGuardia to Wilmington,” said Sarah Hall, branch manager with AAA Vacations.

AAA is one of the travel agencies that have created packages to help bring people through the doors and onto planes at ILM.

“New York is a popular destination, not only for the culture, but for the sight seeing and for the diversity and shopping,” Hall said.

The packages include hotel accomodations as well as tickets to a Broadway play, a Yankees game or even the US Open.

ILM Finance Director Jim Morton says the packages are geared to show off our airport.

“It’s so easy and convenient that you really enjoy the experience, and you don’t stress,” Morton said of traveling through ILM. “You have plenty of time to go through the security checkpoint. It’s relaxing, and it goes back to our rocking chairs that we put in years ago. It’s a relaxing environment, and travel shouldn’t be stressful.”

Morton says the airport hopes to start marketing in New York City soon.

He says he hopes in return that will bring people here to southeastern North Carolina.

“It would be tough for us to market to the world those vacation packages coming into Wilmington, but what we can through AAA and maybe other travel agencies is have them promote it,” Morton said.

Promotions he hopes will help boost tourism dollars in our area.

Travel packages start at $564, but that price does not include air travel, because of the fluctuating cost of airfare. Travel agents say they will, however, help you book a flight.

Newark NJ would appeal to more people since people from NJ and NY could take advantage of it. Even Atlantic City NJ for those who would like to gamble. To fly into LaGuardia and have to get transportation over to NJ is a pain, I rather do the dreaded drive and have my own car the whole time. This all equals you not getting my money to fly on your plane.
