WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The battle is on for the best southern town, and Wilmington is in the running.

In the spirit of March Madness, “Garden & Gun” magazine set up a bracket featuring 32 southern towns.

So far, the Port City has made it to round two, but it needs more votes to beat out Roanoke, VA, for a spot in the Elite Eight.

“Garden & Gun” Editor in Chief David DiBenedetto says there is a lot to love about Wilmington.

“It’s a great coastal town, and the movie industry, Wrightsville Beach, the great art scene you have there, the great theater scene,” he said, “it’s just representative of people who are passionate about where they come from.”

Common Sense

With an incompetent cit council, mayor, Sterling Cheatem, etc.. there is no way we should even make it to the bracket.

No: Here’s why…
“Wilmington up for Best Southern Town in magazine bracket” (because)…for these accomplishments:
Corruption via City Hall = UP/morale issues in WPD = UP/Potholes on the freeways of late = UP/Sewer System issues = UP/gang shootings = UP/Mayor remains in office> taxpayers gave up.
Wilmywouldn’t Wins!

The End

Is this supposed to be sarcastic? Has anyone at Garden and Gun
been to Roanoke, VA??!? I grew up in God FORSAKEN Lynchburg, VA.
I had a choice of move to Roanoke or Wilmington to work. I worked in Roanoke
for 3 months in the dead if Winter, commuting 60 miles one way, to give the town
a chance. Well Fat Chance Noke. Your crime rivals out own and your smaller, and
a without an attraction of any sort. This is a tourist and industrial town with a rich history.
Infinitely richer than Roanoke. Secondly THE TRAFFIC AND DRIVERS AND EXPONENTIALLY
MORE INEPT AND HORRYIFYING. And there’s nothing there!!!! No beach, Battleship, wetlands, brackish rivers,
True rafting the list is endless. But when a backwoods little known town had worse traffic than ILM
Wilmington. Hands down. How does Roanoke even compare!??
I smell a rat. This isn’t even a logical category. Sheesh.

that has only 260,000 paid subscribers?
Thats ONLY 6 times bigger than the Wilmington Star News – a small town newspaper with a circulation of about 41,000.
For a national mag??????

Pardon me while I yawn……..

“You Talkin’ To Me?…You Talkin’ To Me? I’m the only one here”.

If so…I took I-40 West months ago, and left it all to you Guest-o-matic (me personally to you personally), so you can make Wilmington a better place to live (+) fight City Council through elections and taxpayers involvement (wait…that has yet to happen, has it?)…and…to protest the gang bangers activity that is rapidly taking hold of Wilmington as your Mayor hides silently behind his cohorts that run your show there. The Mayor’s still hiding in that department…isn’t he?

I’ve always found it relaxing to address stupidity by being out spoken towards corrupted leaders of a city…and all you can say is “Leave”, and assuming most likely I am from up North (henceforth you write)… “I-95 is WIDE OPEN …etc”, as you say. Apparently to you…anyone that speaks out with metafores in comparison to how your city is run, and by whom it is run, is from up North, (always from up North because of the Civil War it seems). While people like you, who target those that speak out, as you sit back and wait for others to “Fix It”…your city falls apart, regardless of some magazine. Don’t believe everything you read in the news media. Use common sense, if possible.
Wilmington’s leaders doing what’s right for it’s taxpayers “Ain’t gonna happen” G-O-M…ain’t gonna happen.
You will help see to it…won’t you?

God forbid anyone should say anything bad about here because that’s what’s causing problems, not the problems themselves.

Of course, in your mind, if anyone says anything, that also automatically means that person is from up north. I guess that’s just another way to ignore a local problem.

So, let’s see if I have this correct: Talking about a problem is the real problem and anybody who does is from up north. With that kind of “smart” it probably takes you 2 hours to watch “60 Minutes”.

…and frankly don’t care. Only giving you tips on how to get away from here if you don’t like it and aren’t willing to work for it. I don’t live in the city of Wilmington and never have, but am a local resident of NHC. While I don’t disagree that both the city and the county has it’s sets of issues, they’re no different than any other town this size. I do what I can to make a difference in our area rather than just sitting around piping out chin-music complaining about it. This isn’t just about the “city proper”, it’s about our “area”. Sure, we have our problems, but all-in-all I happen to be proud of the fact that I have an opportunity to reside here. I love it, I love the people and I love the coast. I have a passion for my home and that’s why I work so hard to make it the very best I can. I vote, I volunteer, I contribute and I campaign for those that make good things happen!

Give it a shot sometime instead of shooting at it. You’ll be surprised at what you can accomplish and the good that can result!

It’s hard to support a town when there is so much wrong with it. And why should anyone put in the effort to support it when the citizens of Wilmington don’t even care enough about it to go out and vote. What is wrong with Wilmington lies at the feet of those who did not get out and vote. And don’t bother telling me anything about I-95. I was born and raised in Wilmington and I hate what it has become.

..and your comment is dumber than selling your car for gas money and deciding to use the money to buy some magic beans.

YES. It DOES make our minds go immediately to the conclusion that transplants living here who complain are from the north. It’s happened FAR TOO OFTEN to conclude that the gripers are anything other than yankees. Those of us who were born, raised, and lived here all our lives are aware that Wilmington is not perfect. The difference is that 99% of the time when yankees complain about how things are done here, they can’t stop themselves from also claiming that it was done soooo much better up north. If someone constantly complained that your face is just wrong and stupid and they smacked you every chance they got, wouldn’t you want that person to stop and leave you the h#ll alone?

Your kind of “smart” is the reason the Darwin Awards were created.

2015 years 10 months ago

…as an alternative exit. You don’t seem to have anything but problems with Wilmington and are offering no solutions, so you need to go. Please make haste in finding you’re perfect “Stepford” town!

2015 years 10 months ago

This proposed magazine article about our area is intended to be a “positive thing” for our area. Every town has it’s problems, I don’t care how small or quaint it is. Having a few problems doesn’t mean they overshadow all of the good there is to offer. A positive article appears and you naysayers want to pound this town to the ground and cut the juggular. Total negativity and totally unneccessary.

I generally don’t watch “60 minutes”, but would venture to guess that the 6th grade was the hardest 3 years of your life!

“I vote, I volunteer, I contribute and I campaign for those that make good things happen!” (Unquote)

Guest-o-matic…*try harder* with your efforts.
You mentioned I-95 as a standard reply intended for remarks to Northerners…and you know it.

2015 years 10 months ago

I don’t live in Wilmington anymore and unless extenuating circumstances arise, I won’t be moving back. That doesn’t preclude me from giving my opinion on what is happening there. It’s the people themselves who are to blame since they can’t even bother to get out and vote.

2015 years 10 months ago

you start with Gardens and Guns Magazine.

Then throw in a town which possesses the Azalea Gardens and more thug carried guns than any other town of equal size.

Don’t forget where Mandalanta was going to get its baseball team had that silly bond referendum passed.

It’s as plain as the sheen on Puff Saffo’s doo.
