WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Police are investigating after they say a man who bought a pack of cigarettes from a Kangaroo gas station just before he robbed the store.

They say around 2:15 a.m. yesterday, officers were called to the gas station at 6480 Market Street after a store clerk told police his register was robbed.

Police say the man first entered the store and bought a pack of cigarettes. That's when the clerk told officers the robber went behind the counter after he demanded that clerk get on the ground. Police say the man stole money from the register and then took off while the worker was still down.

The worker told police the robber was a thin, black man, who is about 30 years old and 5'5" tall. Officers say the man was wearing a Carolina toboggan, Carolina sweatpants, and a dark-colored t-shirt at the time of the crime.

Police say there's no word on what kind of weapon the robber had, but WPD is still investigating.
