Man robs register at Scotchman store after paying for soda

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Police are investigating after they say a man robbed the Scotchman near downtown Wilmington after paying for a Sundrop soda.

They say early yesterday morning, a man walked into the Scotchman store at 901 S. 3rd Street around 4:30 a.m. and grabbed a soda from the cooler. That's when police say he went up to the register and paid for the drink.

Soon after he paid the clerk, officers say the man said, "I don't want any problems. Give me money from the register." Police say once he had the money he demanded, the robber took off running down Dawson Street.

The store clerk described the robber as a black man with a medium build, standing at 5'7" tall and weighing about 175-195 lbs. The clerk also said the robber has a clean-shaven face, and was wearing a grey hoodie underneath a military style coat and jeans.

WPD says the investigation into the crime is ongoing.
