Tanker carrying asphalt hits tractor mowing I-40 median

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- A tractor-trailer carrying about 10,000 gallons of liquid asphalt collided with a tractor mowing a highway median this afternoon near mile marker 396 on Interstate 40 West, said Pender County Emergency Management Director Tom Collins.

The man driving the tractor was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington after the accident.

"It probably knocked him 30 feet from the tractor," Collins said.

The accident, which happened shortly after 1 p.m., also knocked the wheels out from under the tractor-trailer, Collins added, causing some of the asphalt to spill.

Officials say the tractor trailer driver has been released from the hospital and no information on the driver of the mowing tractor. All Emergency Service were clear the scene by 830 p.m. and all lanes of I-40 open.
