NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (StarNews) -- School officials in New Hanover County now have a plan to select their top teachers under a new teacher tenure law.
The New Hanover County Board of Education unanimously approved a process to choose the top 25 percent of the district's teachers to move off tenure to a four-year contract and receive a $500 annual bonus.
That's part of a law the NC General Assembly approved in 2013 that eliminates tenure for teachers by 2018, moving them instead to one-, two- or four-year contracts. This year, districts can select their top-performing teachers to move off tenure early.
