SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) -- Fire investigators say a lightning strike hit a Southport home early this morning, sparking flames that eventually destroyed the house.
Southport firefighters got the call about the fire at 705 Burrington Avenue just before 12:30 a.m. Dispatchers say Sunny Point firefighters, Southport Police and rescue crews also responded to help battle the flames.
Brunswick County Fire Marshal Scott Garner says after investigating and assessing the damage, and then talking with the National Weather Service about conditions at the time the fire started, crews determined a lightning strike is to blame.
Firefighters monitored rekindles and hot spots into the early morning, but crews say the home is destroyed. They say no one was at home when the fire sparked, and no injuries were reported.
