Queen Azalea arrives in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The 67th Annual North Carolina Azalea Festival kicks off tomorrow with the Queen's Coronation.

We had exclusive access at Wilmington International Airport this afternoon as Queen-to-be Kirsten Haglund arrived in Wilmington.

Festival president Steve Coble presented her with a dozen pink roses. Then it was off to meet organizers and the media.

We asked Haglund what she's looking forward to most this week

"Oh, my goodness. I'm so excited for the food, the festival, the fun, obviously the concerts. It's gonna be an incredible weekend," Haglund said. "It's nice to get somewhere with the most amazing people. Very welcoming town. I'm just excited about everything."

Haglund, a Michigan native, was Miss America in 2008.

She will officially become Queen Azalea during the coronation at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Wilmington Convention Center lawn. If you cannot make it, don't worry. You can watch it live on WWAY NewsChannel 3 and WWAYTV3.com.

They finally found use for the Convention Center...but when her assistant unloaded her suit case...there wasn't a hotel next door to go to and put it in :-(

When are we going to see diversity in the Azalea Festival, Black,Latino, Native American Queens. Diverse bands, etc. I am not pulling the race card but come on WE all contribute to our community. And not by stealing, killing, or illegal distributions. Show Wilmington is made up of all kinds, we know of the good ole boy system, elite society but let that remain between us not outsiders.

Check out the queens from 2012, 2009, 2004, 2006, and 1985. The queen from 1999 is part Cherokee.

The only people who give a damn is the socially elite in Wilmington!

Who says they're "elite"? Them?
