EXPLORE WITH GEORGE: Cole Brothers Circus

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The circus is in town!

The Azalea Festival signals the return of the Cole Brothers Circus at Wilmington International Airport.

Our very own George Elliott stopped by the big top earlier Thursday to see what thrills and laughs they have in store for this year.

My family and I will NEVER go to this (or any other) circus. It's time to stop the freak show and the torture of defenseless animals - haven't we evolved beyond this????

I'm guessing that for fun your family goes out and hugs a tree, after first deciding which tree would be the politically correct one to hug, that is.

:-)

These people have a habit of scamming people out of their money. Two years ago, my mother won two free tickets, which she gave to me so I could take my 4 year old daughter to see the circus for the first time. Since I didn't have to buy tickets, I had enough cash to pay for an elephant ride before we went inside. After the elephant ride, we went up to the tent and were told that the section reserved for the free tickets was already full, but we could pay to upgrade our seats. Having spent the last bit of money I had on the $8 elephant ride, I had no other choice than to leave. Both my daughter and I were in tears as we walked back to the car. I felt like the biggest loser, and seeing the disappointment in my daughter's face broke my heart. I felt like the worst parent ever.

As I was leaving, I saw three of my students walking up to the tent with their free tickets. I told them what happened, and left. The next day at school, one of my students told me that they let them in (without upgraded seats), and that the free section was almost empty.

The following year, I got free tickets again, but this time I decided to upgrade the seats and brought extra money so I wouldn't have to deal with that. As I was walking up, I saw two women with three children walking away, complaining about the free seats being full. However, before they got to their car, they were stopped by a clown (no joke) who asked why they were leaving. They explained their situation and he said he would "take care of it." He took them up to the tent and had the ticket guy let them in...because there were still free seats available. They just like to sucker people out of their money.

That was the first and last time I took my daughter to the circus. I can say she has had that experience, but I won't be going back.

I have always loved clowns and I am glad this one was actually able to help.
