HUTCHINSON, KS (HCC SPORTS INFO) -- After a season where he became the first Blue Dragon ever to post a triple-double in a game, Hutchinson Community College sophomore Kadeem Allen had another first on Thursday by becoming the storied men’s basketball program’s first two-time first-team NJCAA All-American.
The NJCAA released its 2014 Men’s Basketball All-America teams on Thursday. Allen, a 6-foot-3, 205 sophomore guard from Wilmington, N.C., who signed early with the University of Arizona, led a group of three Jayhawk Conference players on this year’s list.
Allen is Hutchinson’s first two-time first-team All-American. He is the eighth Blue Dragon first-team All-American and 27th Hutchinson player named NJCAA All-American in team history. As a freshman, Allen was also named an NABC first-team junior college All-American.
Allen put together one of the best all-around seasons in the 81-year history of Blue Dragon basketball. He was a central figure for an injury-ravaged HCC men’s team that finished 26-8 and was Region VI runner-up this past season.
Allen was second in the NJCAA in scoring this season at 25.9 points per game, scoring 854 points in 33 games. Allen posted eight of his nine career double-doubles this past season. He set a team record with 13 of his 15 career 30-point games this season, including a game where he scored the fourth-most points ever by a Blue Dragon – 41 vs. Allen on Jan. 5.
On Nov. 15, Allen produced the first triple-double in Blue Dragon basketball history with 29 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists against the Cougars at the Sports Arena. Allen did it again, posting a triple-double of 18 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in a Region VI opening-round game vs. Allen on March 1.
Allen was an 11-time Jayhawk Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week and a two-time NJCAA National Player of the Week.
Allen scored 854 points this past season, the third-most in HCC men’s basketball history. His 25.9 point scoring average was second only to the 42-year-old record of Richard Morsden’s 27.3 point average in 1972.
The sophomore guard set single-season record for free throws (276) and attempted free throws (371). Allen ranked fourth in single-season history with 194 points and was ninth in steals with 76.
Allen finished his career with 1,425 points, which ranks third in Blue Dragon career history behind Roy “Pooh” Hairston (1,687) and Tyrone Jones (1,461). He is the 13th member of the Blue Dragon 1,000-point club.
Allen owns two career and two single-season statistical records. He ranks in 21 career, single-season or freshman statistical lists, ranking in the top three in 11 career, single-season or freshman categories.
Allen will be in the running for 2014 NJCAA Men’s Basketball Player of the Year honors. That will be announced on Monday by the NJCAA.
