LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Two families are picking up the pieces after losing their homes in a fire yesterday afternoon. Now a community is coming together.

Investigators say the fire started when ashes from a burn pit were improperly disposed.

Volunteers are collecting donations for each family, as well as monetary donations in order to get these families back on their feet.

Windsor Park resident, Deana Marr, says she did not know either family before the incident but wanted to do something to help them.

“These folks are just reaching out to people that they don’t know, and that are complete strangers. Anytime there is a need there’s always a bunch of people here ready to step up it is amazing to be in Windsor Park,” Marr said.

Donations are being accepted at the Windsor Park clubhouse until Thursday.

You said: “They are naturally devastated and were not protected against such a loss.”

Did they not have renters insurance? It is ridiculously cheap to buy and covers a loss like this. Since it only covers the belongings and not the structure, it doesn’t make sense to not have it if you are renting.

On Sunday morning, March 30th, 2014 my cousin Johnson and his beautiful family lost nearly everything in a house fire in Wilmington. He and his wife Mandy have three children…Andrew 10, Lindee 6 and Lucas James 2. They are naturally devastated and were not protected against such a loss. After the fire was put out, they were informed that it could be three months or more before they can get back into the house ( a family home they rent). They have suffered a tremendous loss. Things that may not seem important to most but everything to these children…ie, their favorite books, stuffed animals, outfits and what little girl doesn’t love her journal not to mention their brand new bicycles that melted in the garage. Many of you have asked how you can help and I felt led to start this fund. Anything is appreciated no matter the amount. I ask that you please pray for The Butler family as we all know the power in prayer and comfort our Lord provides in times that seem so uncertain! Thanks for taking the time to donate and or pray!

+1 guesty. Renters insurance is so inexpensive that it boggles the mind that ANYONE who rents either a house or apartment doesn’t purchase it.
