Campaign sign vandalism makes claims against republican candidate

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Some campaign posters around town are not displaying a message you would expect. How is this affecting the candidates and their party?

Recently, we've seen more and more campaign signs popping up and with that, campaign sign vandalism."

"This is part of every election, the destruction of signs," said Republican Chairman Sam Ibrahim. "It's just a part of the process."

He says you shouldn't believe what vandals write on the signs. Like the word 'RINO.'

That's what someone spray painted onto some of Chuck Kays' signs. It means "Republican in name only.' But the doctor running for New Hanover County commission says it's just wrong.

"It's really troubling to me that there is a person that feels, just because I may not agree with their position that it entitles them to do that," Kays said. "I don't take care of my patients that way, or my relationships that way and you know what, that's part of the problem with politics."

Representatives from the New Hanover County GOP say this person is not doing the Republican Party any favors.

The moment they find out any new information on the vandalism they're going to report it to the authorities.

You win the award for the longest sentence with the most misspelled words ever.

Politically, this is a very touchy issue. One Local Governments usually chooses to avoid.

Technically, it is illegal, to place signs on the public right-of way, or private property, without authorization. Sixteen years ago, the WPD picked up all illegal signs, weather seen by officers, or reported by citizens. And put them in a big pile, at the Coleman Complex, for pickup, by their owners. Needless to say, there was a huge backlash, on the Chief.

It seems the four local police departments, the Sheriff, and the Highway Patrol, like usual, aren't going to touch the issue. Half the signs will be gone in three weeks, anyway, and all will be gone in seven months.

If his plastic surgery skills are any indication of his ability to lead we are all in trouble. Horrible, arrogant.

He's better to be labeled a "RINO" than a DINO (saur), which is what many in the "tea party" faction of the GOP would like to be.

Fortunately, the bigoted types are getting old and dying off. FRESH ideas and policies will only revive the Republicans.

I guess it is wrong to deface signs if you disagree with a politician or party, but it is fine for those running to dig up any kind of dirt against his opponent hoping to better his chance of winning.....oh, did I mention lying to voters to get elected and then doing whatever you can for your pals and yourself and forgetting about those who were fool enough to believe you and voted to elect you?

The signs themselves are vandalizing the roadsides. Ban them and let candidates win with ideas and not name recognition.

Limit them to private property with permission of the owners. And if they're found in public medians, fine them heavily.

What eyesores and more often than not, end up being trash that the city has to clean up!

Campaign signs should be limited to private property. Why should the public be exposed to this collective litter every time there is an election?

"The moment they find out any new information on the vandalism they're going to report it to the authorities."

It is my understanding campaign signs on the side of the road are considered abandoned property. Since they are abandoned property there is no charge applicable for defacing them. Campaign signs on private property are an entirely different matter.
