WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority has issued a precautionary boil water advisory for homes and business in part of downtown today during a planned service outage.

Crews will replace three valves, which will shut down water service from 9 a.m. until about 4 p.m. The area affected is 400 through 722 Red Cross St.; 400 and 500 blocks of Walnut St.; 300 and 400 blocks of North 5th and North 6th Streets; Peabody Alley and 502 North 4th Street

The intersection of N. 5th St. and Red Cross St. will be closed as crews work.

The work was to have been done a week ago, but it was postponed because of bad weather.

The precautionary boil water advisory will be issued with the outage because periods of low or no pressure increase the potential for the introduction of bacteria into the water system. CFPUA customers in the above described area will be asked to boil their water for one minute then allow it to cool prior to consumption or utilize another water source such as bottled water. Consumption includes drinking, brushing teeth, making ice, food preparation, fruit and vegetable washing and the preparation of baby formula. Customers do NOT need to boil water prior to using it for showering or bathing.

Customers can also call CFPUA’s Precautionary Boil Water Advisory Information Line at (910) 332-6500 for details.
