Wilmington women strive to be naturally fly

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- "Embrace what you have, you know, what God gave you: all your kinks, all your coils and all your curls. Just go ahead and embrace them," Tameka Small exclaimed.

She is one of the founding members of Wilmington's Naturally Fly. The group of women strives to empower females in the area by encouraging them to let their natural beauty show and never being afraid to rock an afro.

Fellow co-founder Shantay Ward said, "We are all natural and chemical-free. We are embracing and loving our natural hair, our wonderful waves, our coils, our kinks...just enjoying it," she paused, "embracing it and its just going to be a powerful movement."

Naturally Fly is just that. It is a movement. The ladies say it is more than a trend, fad, phase or style. It is a movement for women of all backgrounds. This isn't just for black women. Lynne Jones is also a driving force behind the group and said, "From Puerto Rican, caucasian, white, black, everything. Every nationality, we welcome you."

The group is hosting an event Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. at DermOne, 1099 Medical Center Drive, Suite 201. The event, Natural Hair and Skin Care Affair, promises to be fun and educational. The women will help attendees discover the right hair products for their hair and skin.

Overall, feedback about their appearances is positive. But Jessica De Vault Hale admitted that isn't always the case. "Every now and then you have some folks who just aren't used to the huge hair and it can get bigger than this so it might be a little scary for some people," she laughed.

But she never lets that get her down and said no one else should either. "If your hair comes out of your scalp kinky and coily, then embrace it. That's how God made you."

Back in the 70's I had a 13 inch fro. It was awesome. I got a lot of stares and a lot of comments but I just smiled. I wish I could do it today but my hair is not quite there any more. More bald spots than hair. Oh yea I am a white guy. It was cool. All natural too no perm for me. The chicks dug it!
