CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) -- The director of charter schools in North Carolina is warning the schools they could be punished if they refuse to release public records requests for salary information.

The Charlotte Observer reported that charter schools director Joel Medley has written the schools warning they could lose their authorization to get public funds if they fail to provide salary information.

Medley's letter reminds schools that their boards signed an agreement to follow the state's public records law.

The newspaper has attempted to get salary information from 21 Charlotte area charter schools.

State law says personnel files for employees of school boards, the state, cities and counties are confidential. But the law also states that names, salaries and positions must be provided when requested.
