WILMINGTON, NC (StarNews) -- New Hanover County Commissioner Brian Berger has been noticeably missing from the public eye for the past several months, skipping out on his commissioner duties and not making many appearances at local events.

The last full board of commissioners' meeting Berger attended was on Nov. 18. He arrived at 10:35 a.m. for the 9 a.m. meeting, according to meeting minutes kept by the county. He attended an agenda review on Dec. 5, but arrived late and missed all but the last 10 minutes of the meeting.

The agenda review was held hours before Berger was arrested for driving while impaired and drug possession. In February, Berger pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to a year of probation.

that's what they get, that

that's what they get, that old woodrow white and his THUG CRIMINEL cronys tried everything they could think of to bully and whoop up on poor old burger and they finally got what they wanted but looks like the last laff is on them cause burger still get's paid for doing nothing! three cheer's for big baby burger!!!

Not the only disservice to county residents.

Keeping Brian in office is NOT the only travesty here. He's proven time and time again that he is not up to the task of being a fully-functional commissioner. The fact that he's still in office and still being paid reflects a far deeper cancer in county government.

New Hanover County's 9-1-1 public safety center is also guilty of negligent retention. Example: An employee resigned last year to move to another state. That employee was by NO means one of the better dispatchers. It took twice the amount of time it normally takes to get that employee completely trained on every channel in the room. It also required multiple training officers stepping in to train that person, and that is quite rare. Usually one trainer stays with the employee all the way around the room. That employee just couldn't seem to get it together quickly enough, so the administration decided numerous training officers for one employee was the way to go. Yep...a person who CHRONICALLY could not perform the duties of the job was allowed to continue working there. Think about that for a minute. Someone who proved over and over again that they could not handle the job was allowed to keep working there, answering citizens' phone calls.

But this is not even the worst part. That employee moved back to this area, reapplied, and was hired again. All potential new hires are required to take a test that simulates conditions in the 9-1-1 Center. THAT EMPLOYEE FAILED THAT TEST, and was still re-hired.

This is the kind of person that New Hanover County thinks should be answering your calls to 9-1-1 for help.

To top it all off, the 9-1-1 Center has fired 5 - yes, FIVE - employees since last November. These were employees who'd all been working at the Center for no less than 2 years. These were employees - all 5 of them! - who served as training officers as well as calltakers and dispatchers.

More than 26 combined years of very good and faithful service vs. couldn't do the job in the first place/failed the entrance exam. THIS is what New Hanover County thinks is in the best interest of its citizens.

??

Why can't we the people get him off the Board altogether? If we the people are late to our jobs, we get um FIRED!! What makes him any different? I don't want to hear about his mental health issues anymore or his drug problems and his run ins with the law. Enough is Enough. Time and energy has been wasted on this person. Give him the boot!!!

WWAY....

I'm sure you have a lot more to write about in reference to your City Council's shenanigans...than this Dead in the Water subject...don't you?
No matter how many times you report (or dig up) news on Berger...he ain't goin' nowhere. In reality...whether he's here nor there...or shows up anywhere...nuthin' will be done about it because the masses have failed to do so.

The End

**Come to think of it...your City Council 3 Ring Circus ain't goin' nowhere either...HA!**

The End II

Uhhhh...Derrrrrrrrrrr....

....Berger is a New Hanover COUNTY Commissioner brighteyes, not a Wilmington city council member. DOHHH!!! So where's YOUR clown car and the shovel you use to follow the elephants around with?

Are you....

...20 Watts...or 10?

exactly

Which is why he asked why don't they write about the city council instead of beating this dead horse.

Berger

What did Berger run on, fiscal responsibility a voice for the people? It should have been fiscal irresponsibility and a voice for the person,,,himself. He is in a better place by being away from his seat on the board. It has been 6 months since his last tardy arrival to a meeting, only 6 or 7 to go until election time.

I do hope whoever becomes his next employer will check him out better than we did. The only thing he has to offer is his being a poster boy of who not to hire, elect or marry. What a resume.

Brian Berger...

Is he still being paid?

learn to read

if you read the article, you will answer your own question.

Nowhere in the above article does it address whether Berger is being paid. I use to think you had a pretty good grasp of the written word...guess I was incorrect.

re: re: learn to read

Copied and pasted from the StarNews article" (which was linked to this piece):

"Despite his lack of attendance, Berger is still paid by the county. New Hanover does not tie commissioner pay to attendance or participation. He receives a salary of $16,446 annually, as well as a laptop and a cellphone stipend. He is also eligible for standard county benefits, including health insurance."

Try reading the entire news piece next time. " I use(d) to think you had a pretty good grasp of the written word...guess I was incorrect."

Funny how you can make a simple mistake and it can turn around and bite you on you own behind. Done it myself. Looks like it it's your turn this time.

Just fer fun.....

I don't subscribe to the star news.
So, I am limited to the number of articles I can read.
I tried clicking the link but I guess I had read my limit of stories because I got the "you can't read this you cheapskate" warning.

I throw this out there just so it can bite me in the behind 'cause the Star Newsx really does "bite"...

Just sayin'

didn't work.
I'm not technically oriented and I do use Chrome.
So what could I be doing wrong? When it comes to computers 99.99% of my problems are operator errors and I DO take advice with lots of gratitude - so any advice you give would be greatly appreciated.

rowdy, rowdy, rowdy

if you click on the link provided, it tells you he continues to be paid, the amount, and notes he also gets a cell phone stipend and a laptop. It also notes he is eligible for health care.

And, it also outlines how they could change that.

But this close to the elections, and Berger not standing for re-election, it's not likely they will do anything.

Brian Berger

When are members of the Board going to get the guts to remove this nut from his position on the Board. If he does not attend the meetings he cannot be fully aware of the problems facing the Board. Any other Board would have already thrown this guy to the side. upper hand

Ron-

Your outlook and frustration are EXACTLY why the board should NOT remove Berger. Once you politicize this then down the road the commission will remove anyone from EITHER party.
Soon you will have removals based upon nothing but political disagreement.
This is why the voters and voter ONLY should decide, unless there are laws broken. "Our" right to remove a politician from office using "OUR" vote should never be usurped - ever.
That being said - we voters now have a black eye for electing this person in the first place. We made the mistake and now we WILL fix it. Anyone who does not vote should refrain from commenting but free speech is another freedom we cherish highly. I did vote for him. I can forgive an instance of drinking etc but to not work when getting paid? Or to have several drinking related charges against you? Sorry but thats just plain wrong and I will do more research in the future before voting.
But I will NEVER allow the Commission regardless of political make-up to remove another commissioner unless it is for felonious law breaking offenses.

Vog

Vog, while your comment has

Vog, while your comment has many valid points, I just have to say: all the research on a candidate means squat - I thought the same when I researched and voted for that idiot in the White House.......

The board tried to oust him,

The board tried to oust him, but Berger fought it in court and won. The board should not be allowed to kick him off the board, but the voters should be. Unfortunately, there is no law in North Carolina that allows for that to happen.

2020...

I am all FOR recall elections however without that option regular elections fit the purpose.
I voted for Berger and regret it but to allow White and crew the option of removal? Naw that just doesn't set well with me.
Its our right.....
