Wanted man charged with breaking into cars

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A man wanted on multiple outstanding warrants is in jail after police say he broke into several cars in downtown Wilmington over the weekend.

Police responded to 105 N. Water St. just after 1:30 a.m. Saturday for a call about a man pulling door handles on parked cars near the Water St. Parking Deck and the Hilton, WPD spokeswoman Linda Rawley said. Police found Michael Jason Walters, 27, who they say appears to have broken into several cars on Water Street starting near The George several blocks south.

Officers charged Walters with breaking and entering motor vehicles, tampering with motor vehicles and carrying a concealed weapon after police found a pellet gun in his backpack.

Police also found there were outstanding warrants for Walters from Alabama for charges of armed robbery and dangerous drugs. There was also a New Hanover County warrant for two counts of breaking into motor vehicles and possession of heroin.

Walter is in jail under $500,100 bond.

The NC Department of Corrections website shows Walters has convictions for breaking into cars and drug possession.
