WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act. President Lyndon B. Johnson signed it into law July 2, 1964.
In honor of the landmark event, Countywide Community Development Corporation is hosting "Celebrate the Dream."
The event will highlight the 16 schools in Wilmington closed during segregation.
"What we're trying to do is go beyond the dream," event coordinator Faye Jacobs said, "to find viable solutions to help the community become better than it is now."
The event will run June 27 to July 2.
