WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)– A campaign flier for a New Hanover County Sheriff candidate is raising some eyebrows.

Ed McMahon’s campaign office stated he graduated from Hoggard High School in 1987. Problem is, McMahon graduated from high school in Massachusetts.

He says that he proofread the document and tried to correct it, calling this all an honest mistake.

“It’s incorrect and I apologize for that. When I checked everything and proofed it, it was correct. My wife was born and raised here, and I was not, and I’ve never, ever indicated I was,” stated McMahon.

McMahon said today was the first time he had seen the fliers since sending in his corrections.

Election Day is one week from today.

I see the Whispering Committee has, once again, reared it’s ugly head. Six years ago, we were “hearing this” and “hearing that”, about the WPD. Now, I guess, all the rumors are being aimed at Sheriff McMahon.

How dare the Sheriff try to keep the overtime budget down. In order to save tax dollars.

  • marie says:

    Amen brother!!!!!

  • guest45 says:

Well what else would you expect from a DEMORAT?

  • guest 1234 says:

I’ll complain about something as stupid as this too! How much will you pay me? I’ll do it all night long! This is important stuff! Who’d you learn this petty stuff from – Obama? Clinton?

You’re just sad and pathetic. You exemplify what is wrong with society. You’re not trying to make New Hanover better, you just want to stick your fingers back in because you can’t control McMahon. So you run your mouth, make accusations, and offer NOTHING to the community. I can’t believe this is actually news. Something as completely stupid as this.

  • Guest12345 says:

Some of you are unbelievable. Either you are Ed’s buddies or kool aid drinkers, the issue is not what school he went to. The issue is that the chief law enforcement officer in the county has been caught in a lie. This wasn’t a typo. This is an entire line that he wrote in there, knowing it was false. Many people in this county don’t know where he is from so many of them would see Hoggard High School on it and assume he was from here. It was a calculated gamble that could gain votes. He also says on the mailer that he “has deputies in elementary schools”. Well, by his definition there have been deputies in them under the last three sheriffs. There are 25 elementary schools and 2 preschools in this county covered by 3 deputies. These 3 deputies are also designated as Dare and Great instructors. So not only are they trying to cover 27 schools they also have to teach classes. More smoke and mirrors. He finally admitted to the Port City Daily that he did not have SRO’s in every school, yet he is satisfied that all the kids are safe and secure. As a parent, that is not acceptable. You need to wake up and start thinking for yourselves. Stop bashing the other candidates and look at the facts for yourself. If you vote for McMahon you will get exactly what you deserve. I just hope no one gets hurt.

  • Guestoo says:

The only ones making this out to be intentional and a “conspiracy” are those who disliked McMahon in the first place. Evidently, he is a high school graduate – which he takes credit for. It would have been a totally different story (actually, it would have then been a *real* story), if his level of education had been misrepresented.

  • burgerboy says:

that old ed mcman needs to go his libber buttocks back to taxachusetts with the rest of them criminel coddling yankem spankem libber weirdo dingbat’s and not sit around lyin through his tooths about going to high school here trying to beg for votes, it’s just discusting, he should go back and do publisher’s clearing house sweepskates junk cause we sure don’t want him down here!!!!!

  • WilMan says:

I have no doubt that what was posted on that flyer was a mistake. But there are several comments McMahon has made that were not mistakes. There have also been several things going on at the sheriff’s department that the sherrif would love not to get out.

Personally, I think what happens off duty is nobody’s business, but the Sheriff has a certain LT whose been caught cheating on his wife 3 times now. So what does the Sheriff do? He promotes the subordinate to a Detective…..and btw, rumor has it she is pregnant.

Then there is the situation several years ago when all county employees had to furlough, including all the brass. But what most of you don’t know is that the Sheriff and all his brass were given a bonus at the end of the year to make up for that money that was lost. His “front line” deputies received nothing.

Sheriff also gave a certain Captain a 22% pay raise (when he was promoted to captain) which caused several others who were promoted to receive less than what they were supposed to.

The Sheriff also turned in lots of “leftover” money back to the County Government. But his employees suffered because they were forced to flex out their extra hours instead of getting paid OT

Everyone knows that the only way to get promoted is to donate money to the election campaign, have family members at the sheriff’s office or in other county gov’t roles, or be a female. If you don’t believe me look back at this past year and see how many have been promoted that don’t fit into one of those categories….there are not many

  • Larry says:

I like McMahon. He seems down to earth and he likes puppies. I think that rubs off on his deputies. Causey seems to be angry all the time and the deputies back then seemed more amped up or something. That’s talking from limited experience and observations. Literally I vote for McMahon because he likes puppies and doesn’t look mad. And I want to believe he is the one most likely to uphold the constitution he swore an oath to, without going overboard and pushing the limits of his authority. But that’s just my opinion, I know it’s a weak argument.

  • bEACHGIRL1983 says:

Bergerboy, you need some serious help son. Like many on here we believe you to be the bipolar part of Mr Burger, i will be more than happy to drive you to the Oaks for some help. I will be more than happy to pay for your anger management classes. Its just funny to watch you back up Mr burger every time he gets (you get) a DUI and not show for work, but you call a man every name in the book because a printing press made the mistake of printing the wrong school, fyi my company posting my wrong info of where i went to school ( its called a mistake)

  • burgerboy says:

I’m not brian burger i am just a fan of his lol. But i dont get bent out of shape over stuff like that cause i got my freedom of speach and such and i dont need angry managiment or go to the nuthouse, didn’t you say your mom went to them oaks one time on here? oh well take it easy let me know if u want to hang out over the weekend :D

  • Papaw says:

I didn’t know he wasn’t from Wilmington. His Bio on his web page kinda eludes to the fact that he was from Wilmington. It states he moved back to Wilmington in 1992.
So it fooled me and a few others.
Maybe not on purpose, but no the less it did.

  • Vog46 says:

Agree – especially since previous campaign materials clearly contradict this one paper.
Its like Rouzer saying he’s self employed. True, but paid by shills who want him to lobby on their behalf. He correctly tries to paint himself as an independent businessman because if he came out and said “I’m a lobbyist” people would think differently of him.

    Politics is such fun

  • Guest1975 says:

If his bio states he ‘moved BACK here in1992′ wouldn’t it stand to reason that he wasn’t from here originally? If you had done you’re research on him then you would know he is not from here. I face known Ed for over 20 years. I’ve known his wife and in laws since the day I was born. While no one is above reproach, this man and his family are some of the finest people I have ever met. He has done a wonderful job as sheriff. And if you have NEVER made a mistake then pleae be the first to cast a stone at his glass house. I’m sure if we looked hard enough, we could find a few to throw at yours!! VOTE FOR ED FOR SHERIFF!!!!

  • Really? says:

    And you never lie?

  • Larry says:

“If his bio states he ‘moved BACK here in1992′ wouldn’t it stand to reason that he wasn’t from here originally?”

  • Guest2020 says:

What would his motivation be to lie? It is widely known that he didn’t grow up here or go to school here.

  • Justice for all? says:

So the sheriff got caught in a lie and all he’s got is that it was an honest mistake? No print company would print an order without him proof reading it and signing his approval. If changes are made, then the revised one is again given to him to proof and sign his approval. The big question is this: WHY WAS THIS STATEMENT PUT ON THERE TO START WITH? He is not from here and never attended school here! It’s not a simple typo, it’s an out and out lie. It was a calculated risk to fool unknowing voters into thinking he was from Wilmington. Is this the type of person you want for sheriff? Mr. Pickey: find out what print company did the work and they should have the proofs and signatures on file.

  • ireckon says:

This all you got? Who gives a r*** a**!

  • PublicAvenger says:

Of course it was a mistake. Why in the world would someone want to “lie”, and claim they graduated from high school, at age 11 ?

  • Guest-o-matic says:

…for the sheriff to post an “…out and out lie” as you state? A fact like high school graduation can be discovered by anyone with internet access in less than 2 minutes. I see absolutely no advantage with the sheriff making that claim and believe it to be nothing other than an error, be it his, his agent or that of the printing company.

Why this is even considered worthy of local journalism, I haven’t a clue. However, since this issue has been so galantly highlighted by WWAY, perhaps they’ll do due diligence, find out where the mistake occurred and write a follow up article.

  • justin says:

If he had truly proof read the copy, he would have also noted that “F.B.I.” is also inaccurate. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is always abbreviated as “FBI”, with no periods.

The devil is always in the details.

  • local voter says:

Sheriff McMahon’s biography has always been widely published, this is an obvious error that was overlooked as he has been likely on leave to attend citizen early voting events. As a local New Hanover County school graduate, I remember his wife was a local graduate. He attended and completed Cape Fear Community College Basic Law Enforcement Training program locally in 1991 – “Sheriff Ed McMahon began his law enforcement career in 1988 with the Vermont State Police, where he rose to the rank of Senior Trooper. In 1991, he and his family returned to Wilmington and he continued his career by joining the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office. During his career with New Hanover County, Sheriff Ed has worked in both the Patrol and Detective Divisions where he served as a Deputy, Detective, Sergeant, Lieutenant and Assistant Division Commander. In 2003 he was promoted to the rank of Captain and assigned to head the Judicial Services Division.”

  • kingstonman says:

I may be wrong but it appears to me a certain News site in New Hanover County is not for McMahon and seems to be leaning toward an old ex-sheriff.I may be wrong but all reports I have seen or heard so far this seems to be an unsaid thing going on in their reporting.
My thinking is why would we elect someone that was a sheriff for years then stepped aside after recommending the man now that’s sheriff? He had his chance and then said I DO NOT WANT IT ANYMORE. Sure folks can change their minds but wonder if the ex-sheriff was maybe pushed in to doing this now? I personally cannot see that the ex-sheriff did such a bang up job when he was in office. The gang thing didn’t hit our area until after he left office. The gangs have now hit just about every county in NC and until law officer’s hands are untied and allowed to do their job without someone saying the law is too forceful then nothing is going to change no matter who our sheriff is.
All of this of course is just my opinion.
But I do not think Sheriff McMahon purposely led us astray about his high school graduation. All any of us “southerners” have to do is listen to his speech and we know he isn’t from the south! But so what? I married a Yankee and have had a wonder 45 years of marriage! And as for leading voters astray how about the signs saying “re-elect Causey” ? AS inferring he is currently holding that office???!!!!

  • Marie says:

    You have my vote Sheriff!!!!!

  • VA.Angela says:

It is common for a person to approve text, and then the approved text is cut and pasted so many times for design purposes that the meaning of the original text is changed. This happens in news print all the time. Maybe there was a blurb about his wife attending school in Wilmington and this got edited down in a misleading way due to space requirements. Such happens all the time.

  • Chaz says:

If it is the same one we got, it also says he’ll host a Purple Heart event in August 2104, 90 years in the future…

  • jj says:

Didn’t change my mind. I voted for him this morning. Sid, sorry, but I worked with you in the past and I know what type of person you are.

  • Tracie C says:

I’ll assume this won’t be posted but here we go anyway:
Who’s to say (GASP!!) that the writer of this article isn’t a voter/contributor to the sheriff’s opponent!!???!! (I don’t care but the mongerers might).
If that’s not the case then how about this:
I’ve seen many fairly ridiculous news stories reported but is someone seriously getting paid to write drivel like this just to get all the “drama kings/queens” going?
I’m SURE the fact of where he went to high school or not should DEFINITELY be looked at before voting for him……PLEASE note – this is SARCASM.
And people seriously make this a point?
Will some reporter please post the preferred underwear color and style of our constituents running for sheriff? I won’t vote for anyone who wears anything BUT tighty whiteys.

  • No more bad cops, please says:

McMahon’s flyer reads, “I will make professionalism, responsibility, accountability and integrity count!”

When exactly do you plan on doing this? You obviously are trying to mislead voters into thinking you have been in Wilmington long enough to attend high school here. Just a good ole’ local boy. False.

Additionally, you claim to have graduated from high school in 1987, but were married in 1982. Six years prior to graduating high school. Did you marry in the 6th or 7th grade or were you just mentally slow and in high school that long?

Bottom line, if you cannot manage a mailing how in the world can you expect us to think you can manage the sheriff’s department?

  • guest111 says:

If you will re-read your comments here I think you will see how childish they are. This is so petty and stupid. You have to be a Causey supporter.
