WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — We received two news releases this afternoon highlighting how much crime has gone down over the last six months in Wilmington’s public housing.

In the first, the Wilmington Housing Authority said it was down 74%.

But then the Wilmington Police Department quickly sent a follow-up news release saying it was down 51%.

WPD credits the decrease to the creation of a joint Housing Unit with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Department. The unit doubled in size placing 14 officers and deputies patrolling Wilmington’s Housing Communities. The unit was expanded after an increase in gang violence.

The numbers are based on a six month time period from November – April for the past five years.
