BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- Bladen County Sheriff Prentis Benston is a step closer to reelection.

Benston easily won his Democratic primary battle against Steve Lesane by garnering 62 percent of the vote. Republican Jim McVicker will challenge Benston in November.

Meanwhile Bladen County voters said no to a higher sales tax and alcohol sales.

Voters struck down a quarter-cent sales tax increase by a 72-28 margin. The money generated from the tax would have gone toward school improvement projects.

Alcohol will not run more freely in the county after voters also voted down a referendum on unfortified wine 53-46. A referendum to allow the sale of malt beverages also fell by a similar margin.
