PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A woman charged earlier this year for stealing from the church where she used to work has pleaded guilty to the crimes.

Gloria Hardee, 58, recently pleaded guilty in Pender County Court to three counts of embezzlement. A judge sentenced her to five years probation and ordered her to pay restitution of $114,323.

The District Attorney’s Office says Hardee’s sentence is a longer term of probation than is usually given, but the judge ordered it to give her enough time to pay back the money. If Hardee violates probation, she will receive three 6-17 month consecutive active terms in prison, the DA’s Office said.

Pender County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Hardee for felony embezzlement in February. Investigators say officials at Riley’s Creek Baptist Church in Rocky Point noticed something was not right with the finances back in July. To confirm their suspicions a short audit was conducted in July. It showed that there were misused funds.

The church says it fired an employee at that time, but at the time of her arrest would not confirm if it was Hardee, the church’s secretary and treasurer. The church then contacted Wilmington Baptist Association to do a second audit in November.

She has already cut the amount she is paying back by almost 3/4’s of the original amount. Oh yes, she started drawing disability during this time also. Have you seen the house see lives in?

Why not just send her to jail? I’m a 13 yr. teacher and don’t even make that much in 3 years total. How is she supposed to do that, plus pay her own bills? Perhaps they want her to embezzle money from someone else…?

You’re a teacher? Imagine that. If you make 1/3 of what she stole a year, you don’t need a raise for 9 months work (assuming public school). She should have figured those things out before she decided to steal. Putting her in jail makes no sense. She is not violent and how would she pay restitution from jail? Why should the taxpayers furnish her free room and board? Gotta think outside the box here, Teach. Guess she is going to have to cut some corners, and clip a lot of coupons.

She will never pay this money back, so why not jail time? Why do you think she stole the money in the first place? Besides, who worked hardest for their money?

Her husband will have to work a LOT OF OVERTIME. He works for GE! And she still needed to steal from the Church.

First of all, they will set up a payment plan for her.

Secondly, and most importantly, she stole the money and she should have thought about the consequences before she stole it.

I suppose you think she should just not be punished for her crime and that her victim should just suck it up and take the loss? How is that right?
