WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police say officers had to use pepper spray after a crowd got out of hand downtown early yesterday morning.

WPD spokeswoman Linda Rawley says it started at 2:17 a.m. when officers responded to a crowd “being extremely unruly” in front of Pravda at 23 N. Front St.

When officers got there, they found a man on the ground unconscious who had to be taken to the hospital. Investigators say there was some sort of fight between the man and another man in the crowd. Police charged both men with affray.

Rawley says officers ordered the crowd several times to disperse. Eventually they used pepper spray, Rawley said, and charged four people with failure to disperse.

The names of the people charged were not immediately available, Rawley said.

Just curious about the brawlers downtown. Were they locals? College students? Servicemen? Or tourists down here to party and drink?

the rest of cops are over on the downtown gangsta streets so you can stumble home or to your taxi without getting robbed or shot, give the few cops that are outnumbered downtown working the bar crowd control a break, leave the area when ordered to leave.period.

I’m glad to hear the crowd was pepper sprayed. I have seen crowds of drunks threatening each other and passersby.

Downtown Wilmington is a drunkards’ paradise, where unruly mobs gather just itching for violence.

I’m sick of the bars in Downtown ILM, and that’s why I decided last month to stay away.

On Friday and Saturday nights, Downtown ILM has become dangerous because of unregulated alcohol consumption. I have watched numerous times when bartenders serve obviously inebriated patrons over and over.

Dude…really? Good!..you don’t go down there. I’m betting you haven’t ever gone. You act as if a riot is going on constantly. Get a life. I was downtown myself last night and actually it was pretty slow. One dude was running off at the mouth and another guy helped him shut it. It was a pretty mild deal at best. All this violence you seem to know so much about…’exaggeration’ is your middle name.I go downtown a few nights a week. There is nothing that suggest it’s dangerous. Things can happen wherever people gather. We will be at Hell’s Kitchen tonight for Adam’s trivia…pretty darn cerebral crowd patronizes there. Check out Fortuna Glass for upscale wines and great hor d’oeuvres…I could go on. ‘drunkards paradise…unruly mobs…lmao!

I attend UNC Charlotte and my sister attends UNCW. I was visiting my mother down there in Wilmington for Mother’s Day weekend and decided to go out with my sister for a couple of drinks Saturday. I saw the entire incident, it was crazy! I have never seen anything like that before in my entire life. We have much more bars and a bigger Downtown area in Charlotte NC and I have to say that people in Downtown Charlotte act much more reasonable compared to what I saw Saturday night in Wilmington. I always think of Wilmington as this little small town at the beach. But the little juveniles I saw that night acting like there big and bad because they have some alcohol inside them. I will NEVER suggest any one from Charlotte to go downtown in Wilmington. I saw firsthand the New Hanover police that night and all of them had their hands full! Every drunk idiot acted like an imbecile and seemed that no one out there could handle there alcohol. I have to give it to the New Hanover Police, because if they were not there that night it could have gotten worse. Better be lucky all those drunken idiots were not in Charlotte acting that way because our Police in Charlotte would have done more than just pepper-sprayed you! They don’t put up with childlike behavior up here. I heard the New Hanover Police telling the crowd like 100 times to move. 100 times are too many chances!!! I was in line at a pizza store outside on the sidewalk and the New Hanover Police only told me one time to leave the area and that’s all it took, one time. You don’t listen the second time, you get what you deserve. I act that way because I was brought up to RESPECT cops and have manners. Charlotte PD only tells you once, and if you don’t move. Its you’re A**.

I would have to agree with the Charlotte comment. I too was down there and heard a commotion down the street. I walked down toward the large massive crowds that where congregating. I heard one officer person yell in the intercom like three times for everyone to leave and get off of the sidewalks. Other Officers were saying the same thing, to move. I could not believe the drunks were given so MANY chances. Officers in Greensboro NC only tell you once, after that if your still there you better get ready for a face plant on the curb and your teeth knocked out. It’s happen to a friend of mine in Greensboro NC. It seemed that there would have been more police out there. Because it was like seven hundred people surrounding the cops. But only like five cops compared to seven hundred drunken people. They could not pay me enough to do their job!

And some people wanted to put a stadium downtown.
