NC legislature starts this year's session

RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- North Carolina lawmakers are back at work as this year's legislative session has opened in Raleigh. People unhappy with the General Assembly's right-leaning direction have returned, too.

The House and Senate sessions opened at midday Wednesday. The legislature's primary job for the next two months is to adjust the state budget. Gov. Pat McCrory planned to release his ideas later in the day.

Several interest groups unhappy with the GOP agenda gathered Wednesday morning and vowed to fight new Republican proposals, including changes to the teacher pay structure. They're also still angry about new voting laws and how Republicans refused to expand Medicaid last year.

The state chapter of the NAACP, the North Carolina Association of Educators and Action NC all held events.
