WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Funeral services for coaching legend Joe Miller were held Saturday at St. Mark Catholic Church.
Hundreds of friends, family, Colleagues and former players came out to the service.
NFL defensive legend Clyde Simmons was there as well and before he had made over 120 sacks, he was playing football at New Hanover High School under Coach Joe Miller.
Simmons thinks back on Miller's coaching style. "A lot of people say he was tough, say he was a disciplinarian, but better than that he was a good man," Simmons said.
To the players, Simmons says he was so much more than a coach.
"He raised a lot of guys whose fathers weren't in the picture," Simmons said. "He'd have you at his house for dinner, whatever it is that to make sure you stayed on the right path."
Coach Miller definitely helped Simmons stay on the right path. A path that took him to college and later, a record breaking career.
Simmons said, "It's just one of those things that I could never measure how much influence he has in my life."
