WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Don't look now, but the Wilmington Hammerheads are suddenly one of the hottest teams in USL Pro Soccer. They've won their last two games, both came against the Charleston Battery.
Saturday's game against Charleston was a bit chippy, especially in the second half. Jordan Hamilton, on loan from MLS Toronto FC, scored the only goal of the game for Wilmington. Shortly after Hamilton's goal the game got out of hand from the players and officials. "I'm disappointed with some of our players, we have to be more mature, but it's a win," head coach David Irving said. "We got three points though and we would didn't let a goal in again. We've scored five on the road, but only one at home, so go figure. It was a battle, everybody did their job, everybody worked hard. I know that's a relief that we got three got three points at home because we jump up in the league quite considerably."
The Hammerheads are now in 6th place in USL Pro out of 14 teams. Both Wilmington and Charleston had a player ejected on Saturday. Midfielder Shawn Ferguson of Charleston and Wilmington goal keeper Quillan Roberts. After the game we asked David Irving what he saw that caused the bench clearing scuffle. "You should ask the referee what he saw! Obviously there was a first tackle here that the guy got nothing for. That was a bad one and that was a bad one. Our goal keeper can't do that(Quillan Roberts). He's young, he's a big boy. He wanted to protect his teammates. I understand that. He's a handful, but I like that about him, but you can't get sent off and Matt (Glaeser) came in with a pulled quad from the other night. Matt did a great job."
Next up: Wilmington will host Pittsburgh at Legion Stadium at 7:30 on Friday, May 23.
