WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The search for a new head football coach at Ashley High School is underway.

The Burke County School Board last night approved Tom Eanes to be the new football coach at Patton High School. Eanes was named Ashley’s football coach in January 2011 after seven seasons at Pender High School.

Eanes confirmed with WWAY on Monday evening that he was up for school board approval in Burke County, but he asked that we not release the information until he met with his players on Tuesday morning if he ended up getting approved. Eanes told the Ashley football players he’d be taking over the football program at Patton at an 8:45 meeting Tuesday morning.

Roy Turner is the director of athletics at Ashley High. “Tom feels like this is a great opportunity for him to get closer to his parents who live on Mooresville,” Turner noted in a release to local media. “The athletic department and administration would like to thank Coach Tom Eanes for his service to the students and athletes of Ashley High School. He has worked very hard and has made a positive difference at Ashley High School. We wish him and his family good health and success in the future. Our search for a new head football coach will start immediately.”

Ashley is also looking for a new basketball coach. Last month the school decided to fire David Rutledge after one season on the job

Three coaches are now gone in one month.

    What is going on?

Time for a new AD, and some stability.

  • Carol Eanes

Tom’s parents do not live in Mooresville as stated by Roy Turner. They live in Mocksville.

Someone should stop and ask the question: “why is everyone leaving Ashley High School?”

Time for an adjustment people. New attitude and new administration.

Everyone is unhappy and someone should notice.

Perhaps you should do your homework on what he has accomplished?

He should find another hobby. 9 wins 22 loses. In the REAL world, he would be fired and NOT offered another position within the company.

He transformed tiny Pender High School into a football power in Southeast NC. I know when my child’s school travelled to play Pender several years ago it was the most physical and hard hitting game of the year. Not dirty, just hard nosed, hit to the whistle football. They always advanced deep in the playoffs while he was there. He also had Ashley turned in the right direction.
