WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Marine who died after apparently falling out of an MV-22 Osprey during a training flight over Bladen County Monday night has been identified by family.

An Illinois newspaper reports a family in Coal City, IL, says the Marine was Steven Hancock. His body was found in a blueberry field off US 701 near White Lake Tuesday afternoon.

While the Marine Corps has said it would not release the name of the victim until 24 hours after notifying the family, Hancock’s mother told The Herald-News of Joliet, IL, earlier Tuesday the Marine Corps had notified her Monday evening that he was missing from the flight.

It is still unclear how Hancock fell out of the Osprey during the flight. Investigators say he was the crew chief on the Osprey and should have been tethered in the rear of the aircraft.
