CIVIETOWN, NC (WWAY) -- A Brunswick County firefighter lost his home to a fire overnight. Two firefighters were injured while battling the fire as well.
For 12 years Robert Prevatt has been fighting fires. For one year he's been doing it right here in Civietown.
"I was in my room and I seen flames so I looked out my window," Prevatt said.
Last night was different, though. It was his grandfather's house.
"My grandson came out of the bedroom and said, 'Grandpa, you gotta get out of the house, 'cause the front porch is on fire," said Robert Prevatt Sr.
They still don't quite know what happened.
Prevatt Sr. says leaves underneath the front porch caught fire. By the time they realized it was engulfed, it was too late.
"I wanted to come up here, but then I was like you know," Prevatt said. "I hesitated, and then I realized, you know, I could come up here, grab my gear and come back and actually try to save my own house."
Try he did, but the fire proved too much. The home, their home, is a total loss.
"'Cause it's actually your stuff that you're looking, at that's what's being burned," Prevatt said.
He says it's changed the way he thinks about fires, and he'll keep fighting them too.
They intend to save what they can saying this fire won't beat them.
"I'm gonna rebuild," Prevatt Sr. said. "This is home."
As for the two firefighters that were injured, one suffered a fractured foot, and the other was treated on the scene for smoke inhalation. Everyone is expected to be OK.
