Airport Authority to discuss getting rid of member

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County Airport Authority has called a special meeting tomorrow evening.

Chairman Thomas Barber says the meeting is to decide whether to recommend removal of board member Al Roseman.

Barber would not elaborate on the concerns the authority has about Roseman other to say that there were concerns enough to warrant a meeting to discuss them.

Roseman has not yet returned a call for comment.

    Sounds like Roseman is doing is job. He is not there just to be a rubber stamp. He is supposed to question to protect the interest of those he is serving. The chairman should just face the facts that he is not a dictator. Since he is so upset I would have to wonder what he is hiding.

    I’d invite anyone to look at “” or other sites that list traffic to/from ILM; most of it isn’t the airlines. (And this doesn’t include pilots not filing flight plans). Of the airports I’ve been through ILM ranks 2nd only to PSP (Palm Springs CA) for being user friendly for passengers, but I’d have a hard time supporting it if they keep turning their back on general aviation. (Meaning the guys/girls that fly smaller planes for recreation or whatnot and may very well turn into the next airline Captain after some training)..

    I have to agree with you. While WE may want the convenience of multiple non-stop flights to everywhere we have to realize that traffic through ILM just doesn’t justify that type of investment here.
    We do have to fly within our means so to speak……

    They need to be looking at removing Barber. It is a sad day for an airport when the Chairman of the airport board calls small General aviation planes “rinky dink airplanes”. For some reason he thinks ILM is the next CLT or LGA. The reality of it is ILM will always be a small wanna be commercial airport

    As a former employee at a general aviation airport that transitioned into a commercial airport some twenty years ago I support the comments of ILM pilot.
    These pilots are the backbone of any small airport they buy avgas which is I do not know how much 100 octane low lead is now a gallon it was $1.79 when I worked in the industry and we made a dollar a gallon on it,they pay hanger rent ramp fees support mechanics ,linemen,flight training and administrative personnel. They also provide their time and equipment to charities not only here but all over the county.

    The only reason this Barber guy can be so arrogant is that taxes support the airport as an “authority” and he does not have to make a profit. It is corporate welfare for the airlines and car rental companies paid for by people that never use the airport as in all of the taxpayers.
    This type of attitude by a government employee should not be tolerated

    I guess he licked the red off someone’s candy and they are not happy. I really bet he was the swing vote on something and the ones that lost are not happy.

    Yep… until airlines change the “Hub and Spoke” model we are just a feeder to Charlotte or Atlanta depending on which airline you fly. Try comparing costs to a flight to Charlotte Vs. one to Raleigh (Good luck finding one that doesn’t take you out of the way).

    When Chairman Barber said he wouldn’t elaborate, it was time for this reporter to unpack his shovel and do a little digging.

    In addition to the aforementioned shovel, a little tenaciousness should be a required tool in every professional reporter’s toolkit.
