Police: Shots fired into car causes man to crash into tree

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Police are investigating after they say someone fired shots into a car with two people inside, causing the driver to crash into a tree.

Wilmington Police say it happened in the 400 block of Maides Avenue Sunday around 3 a.m. Officers say that's where driver Juan Brailford told police he was driving down the street when some men started shooting at his car.

Police say Brailford then lost control of his car before hitting a tree nearby. They say he told officers he had a female passenger in the car at the time of the shots fired and crash. Investigators found one round of bullets inside the car, and three more shell casings in the street.

Officers say Brailford was unable to give a description of the men firing shots, but WPD continues investigating.
