Wilmington Police cruisers get new look approved

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY-TV)-- Wilmington police cruisers will be getting a new look.

The decision was made at tonight’s City Council meeting but not without scaring up some controversy.

When the new design was unveiled at yesterday’s city council agenda briefing Council Member Laura Padgett said it was too intimidating.

Though it passed tonight she still wasn't exactly thrilled.

The new police cars will go from the older style white cars to a sleeker more modern style.

Police Chief Ralph Evangelous says the new style was decided on by a majority of the department, and represents a classic look. Black and white as opposed to what the department currently has. Adding that the new design shows up better at night. Padgett says the new cars are fine but takes issue with the process.

“Well I think they are a little bit (intimidating),” said Padgett, “It is a major change from the way they look now. “

“No I don't find them intimidating,” said Chief Evangelous, “I think they're somewhat nostalgic traditional but with a modern flair to them.”

In total the department will be getting 22 new cruisers.

The cars will cost more than $500 thousand dollars to taxpayers.

Padgett making the point that she can live with the cars but because the cars technically belong to the taxpayers she thought city council should have had more say in the new design.

Shouldn't it read on the side of the Cruiser.....

Pole Lease?

My heart goes out to all

My heart goes out to all those poor, little, intimidated criminals.

Cost

I wish I could get so brand new charger with a hemi for around $23,000.00. I even like the colors.

clueless old bitty

"Padgett making the point that she can live with the cars but because the cars technically belong to the taxpayers she thought city council should have had more say in the new design."

Why doesn't she just admit she is getting feeble in her advanced years.

I see absolutely nothing

I see absolutely nothing "intimidating" about the color scheme of the new cruisers. Black and white with "POLICE" on the sides are about as traditional as it gets. I just don't know where Laura Padgett is coming from on this issue. I say let the Chief and the officers who drive the vehicles pick and choose what suits their needs the best.

$500,000!

Seriously, all this talk about the color when you need to pay attention to the COST. I am disgusted by all the extra taxes I pay living in Wilmington and working a rather low wage job. I almost cried when I got my NC tag, it was over $300.00. $500,000...FIVE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS, folks. I say stick with the old cars.

Works out to 22,000 per

Works out to 22,000 per vehicle; inline with the cost of new cruisers per http://www.topspeed.com/cars/dodge/2014-dodge-charger-pursuit-ar160544.h.... Which is several thousand dollars LESS than what you would pay for a similar Charger without the lights and other ancillary equipment (Or spiffy retro paint!)

Sounds to me like they're getting a deal.. police cars go through a lot of abuse every day and need replacing periodically. I certainly wouldn't want an officer to be delayed on a response because his car stalled and wouldn't start again or worse yet worn parts caused his steering to fail and led to a crash.

Yes new cars are way over-priced but that is a topic for a different discussion ;)

Hey, taxpayer .....

Maybe you just missed it or more likely than not recently got your third ticket and are a little pisses at the Police but the city buys cars annually for the PD, usually 20-30 given the year, and ummmmm Heather all cars need to be painted and black is cheaper than white. Just ask a dealer. Anyway just thought I would clear up Laura's major foot in mouth fiasco. Thanks for also pointing out how little the police are paid in this city.... Way to complain about the "real" problem. You complain about your low wage job..... How often are you denied cost of living increases and merit raises ? Also do some research next time before you complain about your taxes. Wilmington has some of the lowest property taxes in the state for a city of its size. Look it up ...... Oh and what kind of car are you driving that requires you to pay $300.00 in taxes? I have a $30,000 car and mine is $170.... Your math seems a little fuzzy.... FUZZY!!!!!!!!!! :)

what should happen all

what should happen all across this state is all cop cars and vehicles should be bought in and painted with a police car look and then the light bar be put back on top, then all officers should be given a recognizeable uniform and the mere visibility of their presence would become a much bigger deterrent to crime than running around in unmarked cars and trucks and paramilitary clothing. It would actually make the officers start feeling like valuable members of the community rather than on the outside looking in.

Well if they belong to the taxpayers...

I find it interesting that Ms. Padgett thinks the city council should have had more say in the design because the cars "technically" belong to the taxpayers. In that case, I think the taxpayers are the ones who should have had a say in it, and as a taxpayer, I am perfectly fine with it.
