WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Police are searching for a man they say beat another man with a bat outside of a Wilmington store, sending him to the hospital last night.
It happened near the Chestnut Food Market at the corner of 12th and Chestnut streets around 8:30 p.m. Wilmington Police say they first found out about the crime when someone from New Hanover Regional Medical Center called officers, saying an assault victim showed up at the hospital.
When police got to NHRMC, they say the victim's face and right hand were very swollen. He then told officers he had gotten into an argument with another man, Freddie Davis, 60, near the store when they began shoving each other. The victim said Davis then told him he had to get something from inside his apartment, which was above the store, according to officers.
That's when they say Davis returned with a bat, beating the man in the face and hand, before knocking him to the ground and hitting him some more. Police say it was not until bystanders stepped in to break up the fight that Davis stopped hitting him.
After a friend drove the beaten man to the hospital, WPD says it issued warrants for Davis' arrest. Anyone with information on Davis' whereabouts is asked to call the Wilmington Police Department.
