WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The search is on for a man police say was caught peeping in a Wilmington neighborhood.
Home is supposed to be a private place where you can relax, and feel safe.
But one woman says she is scared to sleep in her home in The Village at Greenfield after she caught a man peeping into her window last night.
“I was in my kitchen. I had just taken a shower. I wasn't dressed. I was nude, and in my kitchen cooking dinner and I heard some scruffling at my window,” Tranell Waterman said.
Waterman thought the noise was from someone on a nearby sidewalk.
"A few minutes later I heard someone say, 'Damn, you look good,' and I peered out my blinds, and there was a man's face pressed up against the glass,” Waterman explained.
She screamed and called 911, but the man escaped.
"Last night I was afraid, and felt violated,” she said.
And she says this is not the first time something like this has happened.
"There has been a man out in my apartment complex going around, looking into women's windows, and masturbating,” Waterman said. “This is the first time I've caught him."
But Waterman says she does not want to be considered a victim.
"I'm not going to rest until I feel like something is done,” she explained. “I'm going to feel safe in my house, where I pay the rent, and I pay the bills. And I'm not going to let nobody come and snatch that security away from me.”
Waterman did not get a good look at the peeper, but police are searching for the man she described as a black male with a white shirt, possibly wearing a doo-rag.
She says she will be staying with family until she feels safe to return home.
Her advice to other women? Trust your gut instinct, keep porch lights on and doors and windows locked, and always be aware of your surroundings.
